NO DOGS LEFT BEHIND LAUNCHES MASSIVE MULTI-TIER STERILIZATION, VACCINATION AND ID-TAGGING CAMPAIGN FOR DOGS AND CATS IN WAR-TORN HOSTOMEL, UKRAINE

No Dogs Left Behind (NDLB), the US-based international non-profit foundation, a leader in global emergency response fighting for global animal welfare laws, has launched a massive campaign in Ukraine to help shelters and strays with their efforts to save dogs and cats. After a series of on-the-ground visits to shelters and war-torn villages recently occupied by Russian forces to access the welfare of dogs and cats, sheltered, strays and family pets, founder Jeffrey Beri established a critical response plan for its first phase of support for the shelters, strays and families in these areas.
The No Dogs Left Behind multi-tier sterilization, vaccination and ID-tagging campaign for dogs and cats aims to reduce the growing population of dogs and cats displaced by war AND protect the health, safety and well-being of all animals and humans. The program includes critically needed vaccinations, including for rabies, which is extremely important in Ukraine, a country where rabies is endemic, as well as distemper, canine parvovirus and leptospirosis vaccines.
ID tagging also plays a critical role, allowing the public to easily identify the stray animals treated by this campaign. The No Dogs Left Behind Gostomel Animal Shelter team continues to work with local authorities to encourage families and villagers to participate in the campaign.
The multi-tier treatment plan of Phase 1 includes:
- STERILIZATION: 80% sterilization is needed to level out the population growth. This will help lessen the strain on the shelters and stop growth of strays on the street.
- VACCINATION: Vaccinations are extremely important to this campaign. Rabies is endemic to this country, and it is critical to have all animals vaccinated to ensure the safety of both humans and animals. No Dogs Left Behind is vaccinating against rabies, distemper, canine parvovirus and leptospirosis.
- MICROCHIPPING: Each animal, pet and stray, is microchipped thus providing identification of each dog and cat. In addition, families are provided with a phone scannable tag. Microchipping assists in the reuniting of pet with family.
- TAGGING: Each stray is ear tagged to allow the general population to easily identify the animal as being treated by this campaign.
“Our support with this critical campaign for the dogs and cats of Ukraine is not limited to only shelters, it also includes families with pets as well as strays that roam the streets. Evacuating survivors is one solution that will eventually be implemented, but evacuation is a Band-Aid on the current situation,” states Beri. “What is most important is that procreation is reduced, and the health threat of disease is lessened. This way No Dogs Left Behind can evacuate survivors, lessening the current load on shelters thus leveling out the dog and cat population to pre-war levels. Many dogs and cats are now homeless again. It is critical for us to rush to sterilize, vaccinate and ID tag as many as possible.” No Dogs Left Behind plans to hit a target goal: an 80% sterilization goal which will maintain population levels.
This is only the beginning of No Dogs Left Behind efforts to help shelters and strays, dog and cats, in Ukraine. The rescue is committed to helping animal welfare in Ukraine and has set up a fundraising campaign so concerned people around the world can help in the efforts. “It takes a village, we cannot do this alone,” tells Beri. “We need the help of dog and cat lovers everywhere. $40 US dollars, will treat one dog or cat. Together, we can help Ukraine!”
