The Alliance for Education Releases Annual Report Demonstrating Support for Seattle Students

The Alliance for Education (the Alliance), Seattle’s only local education fund, released their 2021 annual report today. The report highlights the success of Alliance programs that support students, families, and teachers across all 106 Seattle public schools. According to the annual report, one program in particular, the Right Now Needs Fund, fulfilled 12,617 individual requests for support for students and families at Seattle Public Schools in the past year. The Right Now Needs Fund works directly at the school level to provide funding for clothing, food, health, internet, and housing costs for students and families across Seattle Public Schools, allowing students to focus on learning by supporting their success within and beyond the classroom. According to the report, of the requests fulfilled from September 2020 to August 2021, 56 percent provided food, 31 percent went toward shelter for students and families, six percent provided school supplies, six percent for clothing, and one percent funded internet costs. Since its launch in 2018 with a generous donation from Amazon, the Right Now Needs Fund has reported more than 35,000 individual instances of support for students and families across all 106 schools. “Our students succeed when they have access to an education system that equitably supports every student in Seattle’s diverse community. As an independent, local education fund, we act quickly to convene community partners to address these challenges by developing, investing, and partnering in programs and pathways that increase equity for Seattle students. We rely on the generous donations of our community to design, implement, and fund the programs and pathways that make Seattle Public Schools an equitable school system where our students thrive,” said Lisa Chick, CEO of the Alliance for Education. The Education Equity Fund was created by the Alliance to serve Seattle students, families, and teachers during times of crisis. During the pandemic, the fund provided 10,000 laptops, 24/7 tech support, teacher training for remote learning, 25,000 meals for students, and more. The Alliance supported the creation of the Office of African American Male Achievement at Seattle Public Schools by raising $2.5 million to fuel its first three years of work. The Office of African American Male Achievement is the first of its kind in Washington, creating a framework that aligns strategy and practices across the district to ensure Seattle Public Schools has the culture, conditions, staff competencies, and community connections in place for all Black boys and teens to excel in their education. Hong Kong Baptist University joint research reveals that gut microbial enzymes reactivate triclosan which induces colitis

HONG KONG SAR - Media OutReach - 3 May 2022 - A Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) collaborative research study has revealed that certain gut microbial enzymes mediate the reactivation of triclosan (TCS) from its inactive glucuronide metabolite. TCS is an antimicrobial agent commonly used in a wide range of consumer products, and it is associated with the development of colitis. Professor Cai Zongwei, Chair Professor of the Department of Chemistry and Director of the State Key Laboratory of Environmental and Biological Analysis at HKBU, points out that according to the research results specific gut microbial enzymes drive the conversion of TCS metabolites to TCS which increases the chance of developing colitis. The research results have been published in Nature Communications, an international scientific journal. Mechanism of TCS exposure leading to colitis previously unclear TCS is widely used as an antimicrobial agent in consumer products such as toothpaste, mouthwash, hand sanitisers, cosmetics and toys. It is a major environmental contaminant, and it has been shown that TCS exposure increases the risk of colitis. Once TCS enters the human body, it is rapidly metabolised to form the biologically inactivemetabolite TCS-glucuronide (TCS-G), which is easily eliminated from the body. Due to this characteristic, the mechanism of how environmental exposure to TCS leads to gut toxicity in the human body has previously remained unclear. To answer this question, a research team co-led by Professor Cai Zongwei, Chair Professor of the Department of Chemistry and Director of the State Key Laboratory of Environmental and Biological Analysis at HKBU; Professor Matthew R Redinbo from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; and Professor Zhang Guodong from the University of Massachusetts Amherst conducted a research study based on the hypothesis that certain gut microbial enzymes act on TCS-G in the gut, leading to the reactivation of TCS and the subsequent development of colitis. TCS concentration uniquely high in the gut To begin with, the research team sought to determine whether the gut has a different TCS metabolic profile compared to other body tissues. A group of mice were fed food that contained TCS. After four weeks, it was found that the biologically inactive TCS-G was dominant in their liver, bile, heart and small intestine, while the colitis-inducing TCS was dominant in the gut (cecum and colon). The results showed that the gut has a uniquely high concentration of TCS compared to other body tissues. The research team then analysed the relationship between TCS-containing products and the concentration of TCS in the human body. In a group of human subjects who used TCS-containing personal care products for four months, both TCS and TCS-G were detected in their stool and urine samples, with TCS being dominant in stool and TCS-G being dominant in urine. However, TCS and TCS-G were not detected in the control group who used TCS-free personal care products. The results showed that the use of TCS-containing products leads to a high level of TCS, specifically in the human gut. Gut microbiota significant in TCS-G conversion The question remains why the human gut has a uniquely high TCS concentration. To answer this, the research team put forth the hypothesis that gut microbiota participate in the conversion of TCS-G to TCS, leading to the accumulation of TCS in the gut. To test this hypothesis, the researchers observed that in an in vitro setting, cultured gut bacteria from both mice and humans were able to catalyse the conversion of TCS-G to TCS. To investigate whether the same phenomenon appears in an in vivo setting, the research team found that the inhibition of gut bacteria from mice by applying an antibiotic treatment almost reduced the concentration of TCS in their guts by half, and it increased the concentration of TCS-G by six-fold. The results affirmed that gut microbiota play a significant role in the conversion of TCS-G to TCS in the gut. Specific enzymes catalyse TCS-G conversion To investigate the mechanism by which gut microbiota catalyse TCS-G conversion, the research team focused on the intestinal β - glucuronidase (GUS) enzymes produced by gut bacteria in both mice and humans, because they have been shown to catalyse a wide range of metabolite conversions. Using a series of screening techniques, two types of GUS, namely “Loop 1” and “flavin mononucleotide (FMN)-binding” GUSs, were found to be most effective at converting TCS-G to TCS in vitro. The research team then applied a GUS inhibitor, a drug that inhibits the function of Loop 1 and FMN-binding GUSs, to TCS-exposed and TCS-free mice. It was found that the GUS inhibitor could curb the conversion of TCS-G to TCS by the GUS enzymes. Colitis in TCS-exposed mice was also relieved after the application of the GUS inhibitor. The results support the notion that specific microbial GUS enzymes drive the conversion of TCS-G to TCS, and as a result, the chance of developing colitis is increased. More stringent TCS controls needed Professor Cai said: “Our research results clearly defined the mechanism by which gut microbiota are involved in the metabolism and toxicology of TCS, and the study offers a way to prevent the development of colitis following environmental exposure to chemicals. “Regulatory bodies should consider imposing more stringent controls on the use of TCS. Although the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) banned the marketing of TCS in over-the-counter antiseptic products in 2016, the chemical remains approved for use in a wide range of products. I’d take it one step further and suggest that Berkshire remove itself from corporate America’s assault on American institutions and culture. I am proud to say that I am a capitalist, but it is obvious to me be that capitalism is failing to deliver for the American people. Is this meeting Woodstock for capitalists, or is it Altamont? Real wages have been falling for years. Wealth disparity has never been greater. And right outside my hotel window here in Omaha is a homeless encampment, an all-too-familiar sight in American cities. We don’t have a free economy; we have bailout capitalism. When small businesses lose money, they go out of business, but when billionaires bet wrong, government steps in to save their fortunes. Money printing by the Federal Reserve and irresponsible, debt-fueled spending by politicians — called fiscal stimulus — have artificially inflated asset values. So those with the most assets benefit the most. Wage earners get ruinous inflation. But even worse than the wealth gap is the values gap. The top 1% now seek to impose their corrupt morality upon the rest of us, whether it is in the form of Critical Race Theory, transgenderism, or the myriad of other “woke” causes that permeate corporate advertising and messaging. Why has corporate America embraced both economic and cultural radicalism? It’s pretty simple. When you have so much money, your fortune is going to come under scrutiny. The best way to insulate yourself and keep anti-business activists off your back is to embrace their causes, even if in the process you undermine the system that produces your wealth. That is what allows Mr. Buffett to advocate higher taxes, even though everyone knows they will fall mainly on the middle class, or bankroll the likes of Hillary Clinton. The Federal Reserve has offered free money to corporate America for over a decade now, creating a class of oligarchs, and greatly enhancing corporate political power. Executives now believe they can tell elected governors and legislators what to do, as we have seen in Indiana, Georgia, Texas and Florida. Last year, Coca-Cola CEO James Quincey, a British citizen, sought to kill Georgia’s new voter integrity law by making inaccurate and inflammatory statements about it. He also instituted diversity training whereby white employees were encouraged to “try to be less white.” Despite being Coke’s most celebrated shareholder, Warren Buffett has done nothing about Quincey. In fact, Mr. Buffett jumped on the “America is racist” bandwagon by signing a statement by corporate leaders suggesting that Republicans seek to restrict ballot access based on race. All this did not prevent Coke from sponsoring the Winter Olympics in China, which has never had a free election, and where minority communities are the victims of genocidal policies. And what about Apple? A large part of Apple’s supply chain is in China. The company removes apps from the app store at the request of the Chinese government because they are used by human rights activists. And of course, Apple is the world’s most successful corporate-tax minimizer, famous for routing profits through offshore tax shelters. Over at American Express, the company instituted an “Anti-Racist Initiative” for employees that teaches that capitalism is fundamentally racist and requires workers to engage in an exercise to determine whether they are “oppressor” or “oppressed.” Activism by “woke” CEOs may be reaching its limits. The people of Florida are fighting back against Disney’s Robert Chapek, who not only embraces the view that gender is a form of oppression, but that kindergarteners must be forced to confront it. Mr. Buffett has praised the brand endurance of Disney’s characters and the trust parents place in its content to be safe and appropriate for children. But now the company is adding warnings to Dumbo, Peter Pan and Aladdin about the stereotypes they allegedly portray. And poor Prince Charming has been excised for kissing Snow White QUOTE, UNQUOTE “without consent.” Warren Buffett has yet to address the crisis gripping corporate America, and I fear he never will. Yes, Berkshire may be a holding company, and Mr. Buffett may stay out of the way of managers, but what happens when these executives use their companies to wage a social revolution that most Americans don’t want? Is he not responsible? He can’t have it both ways. In this country, wealth has been admired and even celebrated because our system allows anyone to become rich. But what happens when Americans suddenly find their history and future under attack by Corporate America? The social contract that permits for such affluence will be broken. Mr. Buffett, if you are the face of capitalism, why don’t you do something to save it? India’s Top Youth Fellowship Invites Applications from Indians and Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) for 2022-23

The SBI Youth for India Fellowship is one of the leading youth Fellowships that gives the urban youth an opportunity to provide innovative and sustainable solutions to the problems faced by rural communities. The program is not restricted to any specific area and offers you a wide variety of projects to choose from as well as the flexibility to design a feasible project of your own liking within the focus areas of the partner NGO’s work. The fellowship covers living, transport and medical insurance costs of stay in rural India, and supports project costs on a case basis. Unique by design, this 13-month program has attracted young professionals, graduates and postgraduates to commit for a year to work on challenging grassroots development projects. Professionals from MNCs like Goldman Sachs, Infosys, Mu Sigma, Deloitte, Ernst & Young, KPMG, Accenture, Cognizant, Schlumberger, etc. have joined the SBI Youth for India Fellowship. Sumana Palle (2020-21 Fellow) from the University of Michigan worked with small and marginal farmers in Khatamla, Rajasthan to grow aromatic plants and create value-added products. Her innovative efforts helped the farmer community increase their income by 20-40%. Eshaan Salim Patheria (2018-2019 Fellow) from Harvard University worked on the electrification of Maligaon, Kalahandi district, Odisha through the solar micro-grid project with the support of Gram Vikas NGO. Run by the State Bank of India’s CSR arm, SBI Foundation, the fellowship is now in its 10th year with a rich alumni base of 450+ alumni spread across prestigious development sector organisations across the country. The Fellowship requires Fellows to relocate to remote rural locations across the country and lead projects focused on 12 thematic areas, like environmental protection, women’s empowerment, water, self-governance, etc. The Fellows work in close coordination with 14 reputed NGOs that provide them with access to specialised expertise in their chosen thematic area. In the last two years, Fellows’ projects focused on helping rural communities cope with the adverse impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, especially in the areas of Rural livelihood, Health, Education, and Technology. The number of youths who volunteered to join the Fellowship to work with rural communities increased as the Fellowship saw approximately 90,000 applications during the pandemic last year.
