Centre for Neuro Skills Promotes Dr. Stefanie Howell to Director of Research Integration

Centre for Neuro Skills

Centre for Neuro Skills (CNS), a leader in traumatic brain injury and stroke rehabilitation services, today announced the promotion of Stefanie N. Howell, Ph.D., CBIS, to director of research integration. “Stefanie has been integral to Centre for Neuro Skills’ research program, looking closely at how we can not only improve the lives of our patients but people with brain injuries everywhere,” said David Harrington, president and CEO of Centre for Neuro Skills. “I’m excited to see the outcomes of our research efforts and how this can give us new insight into improving patient care. Since joining CNS in 2016, Howell has coordinated and designed clinical research studies, written manuscripts and provided education focused on methods for facilitating recovery and maximizing patient outcomes. Howell was promoted to Senior Neuroscientist in 2022 and now oversees the integration of CNS’ original research to expand understanding of brain injury, its causes and best treatment practices in the clinical setting. CNS’ ongoing research includes: Effects of Rehabilitation Following Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Stroke CNS researchers evaluate the durability of outcomes obtained during post-acute rehabilitation following stroke and TBI. This will also determine if rehabilitation outcome is associated with future occupational status, life quality, cognitive function, and overall health, including rehospitalization. Traumatic Brain Injury and the Gut Microbiome Years after a brain injury, some individuals develop a complex set of conditions that prevent them from absorbing essential amino acids. The purpose of this study is to determine if altering the diet in these individuals can change their amino acid absorption and reduce symptoms and markers of neuroinflammation. Effects Of Aerobic Exercise and Rehabilitation After Traumatic Brain Injury Exercise contributes to overall health and protects and heals the brain, but the response to exercise may change after a brain injury. Through examining exercise and how it facilitates recovery, CNS hopes to determine the individual response to exercise (and how it has changed), in order to better tailor therapy to each person. Outcome Biomarkers After Brain Injury Patients consent to providing biological samples to help identify biomarkers in blood, saliva, and other tissues that will help CNS increase diagnostic and prognostic capabilities, tailor patient care and determine how much treatment is necessary. This study will allow clinicians to foresee potential risks that may inhibit recovery and aid intervention effectiveness, allowing CNS to better evaluate current and novel therapeutic interventions. Sleep Alterations After Traumatic Brain Injury and Stroke Sleep-wake disturbances have been identified in up to 80% of those with brain injuries. Sleep problems are linked to impaired attention, decreased cognitive functioning (including memory and attention) and overall diminished response to rehabilitation. This study will determine the nature of sleep-wake disturbances post injury. Researchers may then identify whether disturbances are related to the type, location, or time since the injury, as well as the impact sleep has on outcome and responsiveness to rehabilitation. Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) Following Traumatic Brain Injury This is a noninvasive technique of neurostimulation, which uses low amplitude direct current to alter brain cell firing. Studies suggest that tDCS is a painless technique for electrically stimulating the brain with almost no risk of harm. This form of therapy has been studied as a treatment modality for stroke patients but there is less evidence in literature for effectiveness in treating traumatic brain injury. This project will analyze the effects of a three-week program of tDCS on motor recovery and attention/concentration in individuals following a traumatic brain injury. Lioness Games debuts first board game Biome on Kickstarter, races to over $200K in days

Lioness Games

Lioness Games, a new entrant in the board game industry, has made a remarkable debut with its first game, Biome which has raced to over $200,000 in orders on Kickstarter within days of its launch. The game, inspired by the founder's passion for board games and nature, was funded in a mere nine minutes, attracting over 3,500 backers from more than 20 countries. Biome is a nature-themed strategy game with 120+ different plants and animals. The game is for 1-4 players, emphasising card placement and tableau building. Players navigate through the four seasons, each impacting their biome differently, as they strive for biodiversity and activate unique abilities of flora and fauna to win. As players progress through the game's four seasons, they must adapt their strategies to the changing conditions, making for a dynamic and engaging gameplay experience. For example, each Spring, players place baby animal tokens in straw nests and in Summer time, they must protect their baby animals from their opponent's predators by playing plant cards. The unique wooden components and player interaction make for a dynamic and engaging game gameplay experience. Leonie Grundler, the founder of Lioness Games, former tech industry professional and a long-time board game enthusiast. She worked at Airbnb in Germany and found inspiration for Biome during her time spent in board game cafes in Berlin. "Living in Berlin is where my love for board games went from being just a hobby to a passion” recalls Leonie Grundler. After nearly 18 months of development, Biome is ready for people to enjoy. Kickstarter has proven to be an invaluable platform for small game publishers, with games being the largest category, accounting for 30% of all money raised. The success of Biome highlights the importance of building a community of followers months in advance of launching a game on Kickstarter. Despite the board game market being a $14 billion industry, less than 4% of top board game designers are women and Lioness Games aims to bring a fresh perspective to the industry. Leonie Grundler added: "I never thought I would make a board game or run a Kickstarter campaign, but here we are, a few days in and $200,000+ in sales. I love nature and board games, so it was natural that my first game would be nature, specifically biodiversity, themed. At Lioness Games, we're changing that narrative by creating games that resonate with a broader audience. Our flagship game, Biome, is a testament to this, offering a unique blend of strategy and environmental education.” The game's engaging mechanics and educational value have already garnered praise from nature lovers and gaming enthusiasts alike. Jamie Williams, who runs the TableTopTikTok channel on TikTok remarked: “I have not been this excited about a game in so long. This game scratched every itch I could possibly have! It is so thematic and the pieces are incredible. This game is phenomenal.” While the designer of the board game Dusty Droz, co-founder of Dux Somnium Games and the creator of Botany, added: “I absolutely love how Biome's art and gameplay make your habitats come to life as you play through the game. You can imagine your birds nesting in the tree cards, your opponents' predators slithering across the table, and your giraffe ambling across your board. If the immersion by itself wasn't enough, the way you use your cards and their positioning to build mini-engines and combos throughout the game is just plain fun”. Looking ahead, Lioness Games is committed to designing unique games that spark joy, facilitate connection, foster strategic thinking, and drive wonder among players. In line with the game's theme, Lioness Games is committed to giving back to nature. A portion of Biome's profits will be donated to the Wildlife Conservation Network to support their mission of protecting vulnerable wildlife Paul Thomson, Senior Director of Conservation Programs at Wildlife Conservation Network, commented: "Biome is so rewarding! Its beautiful cards and pieces, the objective of creating a diverse and resilient environment -- it has us hooked. Our team at the Wildlife Conservation Network loves how the game helps you strategize how to protect the species. It's perfect for nature lovers and game enthusiasts alike.” For more information about Biome and to support the Kickstarter campaign, visit: Kickstarter Page About Biome Biome is the first game by Lioness Games. Designed by Leonie Grundler, with help from graphic designer Grzegorz Siwek and art illustrator Jessica Apel. Biome is a nature themed board game for 1-4 players where people must build a biodiverse biome, protect their baby animals and unlock special abilities of their plants and animals. Biome is the ultimate nature themed tableau builder. About Lioness Games Lioness Games is owned by Leonie and Rish and is based in San Francisco, California. Giant Sequoia Lands Coalition Update: Year Two Brings Significant Progress in Push to Protect Giant Sequoias Threatened by Unprecedented Wildfire Risk

Save the Redwoods League

Officials from the State of California, USDA Forest Service, National Park Service, Tule River Indian Tribe of California, Save the Redwoods League, and other members of the Giant Sequoia Lands Coalition (GSLC) today announced significant progress in their work to protect the world’s largest tree species from severe wildfires. In its 2023 Progress Report for Saving the Sequoias, GSLC confirms that coalition partners have more than doubled the acres across the giant sequoia range where treatments are underway. In its second year of large-scale collaboration, the coalition has exceeded its goals with ecosystem wide achievements: Treated nearly 9,900 acres in 28 giant sequoia groves—more than twice the acreage treated in 2022. This brings the total giant sequoia grove acres treated since the extreme 2020-21 wildfires to 14,143 out of 26,000; Planted more than 294,000 native tree seedlings in severely burned areas, bringing the total to more than 542,000 in two years; Initiated and hosted research studies by academic, government, and nonprofit entities; Revived cultural practices and expanded co-stewardship agreements with tribes and nonprofits The full 2023 progress report is available here. “The Giant Sequoia Lands Coalition made significant progress in 2023 to increase wildfire resilience in our forests and communities,” said coalition Co-Chair Clay Jordan, who is also superintendent of Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. “We are realizing the founding goal of the coalition: accelerating the pace and scale of giant sequoia restoration by close coordination and collaboration. Forest treatment is not a one-time event, but a long-term commitment to actively stewarding and restoring these complex natural systems. Everyone benefits from the efficiencies and efficacy of the coalition’s combined efforts—the forest most of all.” GSLC’s work in 2023 was managed by 941 people at a cost of $32.9 million. GSLC conducted initial restoration treatments on 9,886 of 26,000 acres in 28 of approximately 80 groves, which represents more than twice the amount of giant sequoia grove acres treated than the previous year. This restoration work increases the wildfire resilience of the groves by reducing the amount of hazardous and combustible plant materials (fuels) through manual and mechanical fuels reduction, prescribed fires and cultural burning practices. GSLC also worked to improve forest health through reforestation and planted more than 290,000 locally sourced native trees, including 119,000 giant sequoias. Combined with the previous year, the coalition has now planted more than 542,000 trees in and around the sequoia groves. These reforestation projects focus on areas that experienced uncharacteristically high wildfire intensity where seed trees have died, burned seeds were not able to develop, and minimal regeneration has occurred naturally. “Our work to ensure a wildfire-resilient future for giant sequoias lives at the scientific intersection of forest ecology, wildfire and climate studies,” said Dr. Joanna Nelson, Ph.D., director of science and conservation planning for Save the Redwoods League and co-lead of the GSLC science committee. “We are simultaneously applying the latest evidence-based techniques and advancing the field’s understanding through research. As we coordinate research and adaptive management across the coalition, we boost our ability to steward giant sequoias. This is a long-term challenge with long-term solutions, and we are starting the long-term with timely action, now.” “While we benefited from a relatively quiet fire season in 2023, what happens this year is impossible to predict, so we must prepare for the worst,” continued Nelson. “We urge elected officials and policymakers to continue to provide funding and personnel, enact policy changes and help us reduce fuels now so we can continue to address the problem at scale.” Giant sequoias are the largest trees in the world, and severe wildfires have killed up to 20% of the mature trees since 2015. The two federal agencies that own and manage the majority of giant sequoia lands‒USDA Forest Service and National Park Service‒implemented emergency actions in 2023 to accelerate the pace and scale of work. The members of the Giant Sequoia Lands Coalition include: National Park Service, represented by Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks and Yosemite National Park USDA Forest Service, represented by the Sequoia National Forest, Giant Sequoia National Monument, Sierra National Forest, and Tahoe National Forest Tule River Indian Tribe of California, stewards of all or parts of five sequoia groves Bureau of Land Management, stewards of Case Mountain Extensive Recreation Management Area California State Parks, stewards of Calaveras Big Trees State Park California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE), stewards of Mountain Home Demonstration State Forest University of California, Berkeley, stewards of Whitaker’s Forest Tulare County, stewards of Balch Park GSLC Affiliate Members: American Forests, Ancient Forest Society, Giant Sequoia National Monument Association, Save the Redwoods League, Sequoia Parks Conservancy, Southern Sierra Conservancy, Stanislaus National Forest, US Geological Survey—Western Ecological Research Center and Yosemite Conservancy. Crypto Analyst Mark Yusko, predicts a 300% Rise For Ethereum, Outperforming Bitcoin

Kangamoon

In a recent video, world-renowned crypto analyst Mark Yusko outlined that he’s bullish about Ethereum. Over the next year, Yusko believes that Ethereum could offer up to 300% returns, during which it would likely outperform Bitcoin. Meanwhile, a hot new DeFi presale is building momentum. With stage 2 of its presale almost sold out, investors are flocking to maximize their potential returns. Ethereum Bulls Invest $400m in 4 Days Ethereum bulls doubled down on their investment last week. As Bitcoin continues to surge, rumors suggest that Ethereum could gain even more traction as investors diversify into the altcoin market. This has increased Ethereum's open interest. According to data from CoinGlass, ETH open interest increased from $11.4 billion to $11.8 billion from March 1 to March 4. During the same timeframe, Ethereum’s price increased by 16.04%. Presently, Ethereum is trading at $3,525 and has a daily trading volume of $17.4 billion. Having already experienced consecutive price increases over the last week, analysts such as Mark Yusko believe Ethereum could outperform Bitcoin in 2024. Bitcoin Passes $65,000 In the last week, Bitcoin's price increased by 5.77%. Bitcoin is now trading at $65,277 and has a daily trading volume of $42.2 billion. This recent surge has triggered a market-wide rally, with many altcoins seeing returns of over 40%. As Bitcoin continues to pursue its former all-time high of $68,789.63, experts are predicting how high Bitcoin could go. Given its halving event is just one month away, the market is bullish. Some experts believe that Bitcoin could pass $100,000, while others suggest that $80,000 is a more realistic prediction. KangaMoon (KANG) Raises Over $500,000 Amid the Bitcoin hype, KangaMoon (KANG) is gaining significant traction. This innovative new presale has already hit several major milestones, and its utility token, $KANG, has increased in value by 50%. With less than 20% of its stage 2 supply remaining, crypto enthusiasts are buying $KANG at record rates. KangaMoon puts a unique spin on meme coins. Unlike other meme coins, which often surge due to market hype, KangaMoon looks to build a lucrative DeFi community with P2E gameplay and social-fi rewards. The project will showcase an action-paced P2E game where players can battle characters and bet on outcomes. At the same time, users will be rewarded for their social interactions and will have the opportunity to complete challenges for additional rewards. By incentivizing social activity, KangaMoon aims to build one of the best DeFi communities in the world. So far, it's been a big hit. The project quickly sold out during the first stage of its presale, and stage two is almost sold out. This growth shows investors are excited about KangaMoon’s community, which, alongside predicted returns of 220% during its presale, has put $KANG in the spotlight. Can KangaMoon Go Mainstream? KangaMoon provides a solution to one of the DeFi market's biggest problems– it gives investors a community. This concept has already proven to be popular, and as a result, experts believe that KangaMoon could surge 100x once it launched on major exchanges. Centre for Neuro Skills Study Finds Differences in Sleep Patterns Between Men and Women with Post-Traumatic Brain Injury

Centre for Neuro Skills

Centre for Neuro Skills (CNS), a premier provider of traumatic and acquired brain injury rehabilitation services, has shared findings from a study researching sleep-wake disturbances, published in Neurotrauma Reports on January 3, 2024. They found that sleep deficits are correlated with poorer brain injury patient outcomes (verbal skills, depression issues), as monitored by therapists and administrators at CNS. The study included data from 57 individuals between the ages of 18-70 who sustained traumatic brain injuries (TBIs). CNS collected the data between 2018-2020 at its in-house sleep centers in Dallas and Bakersfield. “Overall, we found that lack of REM sleep negatively impacts memory and learning for TBI patients,” says Dr. Stefanie Howell, a neuroscientist at CNS. “In research, we must also consider additional variables that may impact our results. This includes biological variables such as sex, as biological sex does impact sleep. Our research found that women achieve REM sleep far less than men. Additionally, a decrease in REM sleep was associated with poorer learning and memory task performance, indicating a potential impact on outcome and recovery.” In addition to biological sex, CNS evaluated several sleep medications to determine if their use impacted sleep for TBI patients. Howell said “medications do not seem to be impacting results between men and women; however, the use of melatonin was associated with improved REM sleep and may therefore be of potential short-term benefit to TBI patients. It is important to note that over-the-counter melatonin options are variable due to formula ingredients.” “Through research, we’ve found that while sleep supplements in the benzodiazepine family may cause someone to fall asleep, they suppress REM sleep, which is crucial for memory recollection and improved learning,” says Dr. Brent Masel, executive vice president of medical affairs at CNS. “Melatonin was found to help improve REM sleep in the short term, but it’s important to note that long-term use can be habit-forming. I cannot stress this enough – the best medication is no medication.” In 2021, CNS published two other studies regarding sleep-wake disturbances post-stroke. The first evaluated the incidence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and the second study considered the anatomical location of the injury (stroke). *** About Centre for Neuro Skills Centre for Neuro Skills is an experienced and respected world leader in providing intensive rehabilitation and medical programs for those recovering from all types of brain injury.
